OCNHS gets "Smart"!
A round of applause for our Alma Mater’s outstanding achievement!
RP’s only High School with ICT Curriculum gets ‘Smart’
Olongapo City National High School (OCNHS), the only secondary institution in the country that has a special ICT curriculum, took a step farther in strengthening the ICT skills of its students when it formally joined last January 25 the list of beneficiaries of the Smart Schools Program.
The initiative, sponsored by Smart Communications, provides selected public high schools with a computer laboratory connected to the Internet. The PCs are donated by Smart but the Internet connection is provided for free for only a year.
OCNHS, situated in the heart of Olongapo City, has been cited for formulating an ICT curriculum that is unique throughout the country. Aside from the basic education class and special science class, the school has an ICT class that enjoys extra computer subjects not taught in the other classes.
The special program was first implemented in 2002 with an initial 40 computer units used by 65 students divided into two classes. It was then named Special Program for Computer Education but was later changed to ICT Curriculum in 2004.
The first ICT batch is now on its fourth year and is set to graduate this year, while the first year batch has grown to three classes with 40 students comprising each class, said school’s principal, Helen Aggabao.
Aggabao said she picked up the idea of creating an ICT class after undergoing training in Singapore where she was exposed to students being given extensive training in ICT-related subjects.
"When I proposed this, the regional office of DepEd (Department of Education) did not object. They just told us that as long as we don’t lessen the basic education subjects, we’re free to add special subjects for special classes," she said.
Under the program, first year ICT class are given with the additional subject on how to use productivity applications such as MS Office. On their second year, they are taught basic Web developments tools. Upon reaching third year, they are given lessons on programming such as Visual Basic. Finally, on their last year, they are taught basic networking and PC assembly.
But Aggabao said the facilities that the ICT students had to use were very limited. "The PCs would conk out and we don’t have money to replace them. The students also have to share the cable connection we had to the Internet."
The school’s inclusion in the Smart Schools Program was indeed a "blessing," Aggabao said. Now¸ the school is poised to reach greater heights with its Internet connection through Smart WiFi, the carrier’s wireless broadband service.
OCNHS joins 32 other schools nationwide that are now part of the Smart Schools Program. These include schools from as far north in Basco, Batanes (Basco National High School), and down south in Bonggao, Tawi-Tawi (Tawi-Tawi School of Arts and Trade.

Hello, Batchmates!
Just a brief message on behalf of the de Leon family here in San Diego,California, we would like to greet you all my batchmates a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!
And for all the batchmates that I have come across during my (and my wife's) recent short visit to Olongapo, glad to see all of you again. It sure is always fun to be with you all and i can never forget the joy and that feeling of excitement every time we meet.
It would have been a lot more enjoyable if it's a pure vacation and not having a mixed feeling, if not for my older sister who is really ill because of her bone cancer.
I am pretty sure Joey Sardenia, Ed Lopez and Robert Quisumbing are having a blast and a great time with some of our batchmates during their stay in P.I.

Sincerest Gratitude
My stay in the Philippines had been so wonderful despite of the fact that there was sadness within my heart due to my sister's death.

Batch '70 Multi-Purpose Building Blessing and Turnover Ceremony
The formal turnover of the school project was held last Saturday, 10th of December 2005. Members of the Class of ’70 alumni delivered their pledge to their Alma Mater, Olongapo City National High School.
The ceremonies started with the ribbon cutting led by Honorable City Councilor Cynthia Gregorio-Cajudo assisted by the School Principal, Mrs. Helen B. Aggabao, Ed. D.
Engr. Lad Mojica unveiled the marker before all participants and guests all went inside the building led by the officiating priest, Rev. Fr. Bobbie Monge, St. Joseph Parish Priest. The whole building was blessed, coins and candies were tossed and candles were lit.
Rey Toledo, Leonor Dela Cruz and Oscar Baldos hosted the program. Paulino “Paul” Sy-Changco led the Invocation while Dr. Art Mendoza, Jr. delivered the Welcome Address.
Engr. Lad Mojica handed the key to the Multi-Purpose Building to Mrs. Aggabao. This was accepted with gratitude and praise to the members of the Class. She said, “The first and the only set of alumni who had donated a building to the school.”
Lad and Jean Mackay-Mojica also donated their children’s college textbooks to the school, which will serve as references for the students.
Hon. Cynthia Gregorio-Cajudo made a very inspirational message to all and was very much impressed on what the Class has accomplished as students of OCNHS. Members of the Class of ’70 looked back to their roots and delivered their gain. A project no one could have imagined will rise and considered as a legacy to the students and to the school.
Engr. Gene Castro closed the program and catered lunch and pre-Christmas feast from Kong's Restaurant was served afterwards.
The following teachers graced the occasion: Mrs. Belinda Gelacio, Ms. Luz Marty and Mr. Rizalino Cayle. Other guests of the said affair were the OCNHS School Administrative Officers.
